Fix a meal – not a man!

c8911b91c1137bf7c94b277b72ea379dI fell in love with this addictive spicy tuna salad at Yen’s in LA. It’s a huge bowl filled with crunchy lettuce, tomatoes, tuna, crisp butternut squash and zucchini coated with a spicy dressing that’s just plain wicked. It almost calls for your tongue to dial the fire department.

Working out their salad ingredients was a marvelous challenge. This is the only challenge that excites me these days – fixing a meal not a man. Just love the magical combination of celery and tomatoes balanced with sweet and hot.

  • ¼ cup chopped shallot
  • 1 tsp minced ginger
  • 1 clove garlic
  • Juice of half a lemon
  • 2 sticks celery
  • 2 tomatoes, skin removed
  • 1 Tbl sugar
  • 2 Tbls vinegar
  • ¼ cup oil
  • 2-3 drops sesame oil
  • 2-3 drops hot sauce (to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper

Place all the ingredients in a food processor.

  • Romaine lettuce
  • 1 piece sushi grade tuna, cut into bite size pieces
  • 1 zucchini
  • 1 butternut or banana squash
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 English cucumber, chopped
  • 2 Tbl cilantro, chopped (optional)

Use a vegetable peeler to slice the zucchini and squash. Dry well and place in hot oil until the edges begin to brown. Remove, drain on paper towels and set aside. They do crisp more as they cool. Place the rest of ingredients in a mixing bowl, drizzle with dressing and toss gently. Scatter crispy zucchini and squash over the top.

  1. I love recreating restaurant dishes at home so I can relive the meal at any time. Looks like you have done a great job. Sounds like a very simple recipe.
